The days of rummaging for loose change to pay for bus, train and ferry tickets in Auckland could soon be over.
Auckland Transport is in talks with Visa over a new "super ticket" system that will allow commuters to scan their plastic when they board public transport.
Auckland already has plans to introduce commuter smart cards on which money can be loaded to pay for fares.
But a combined Visa and commuter smart card, already in use in Kuala Lumpur, Seoul, Singapore, London and Paris, is the next step.
Visa Australia and New Zealand general manager Chris Clark confirmed the company was talking to Auckland Transport about a partnership to give commuters the option of combining their credit card with the smart-card system.
