The retirement age for judges will rise from 68 to 70, Attorney-General Michael Cullen said yesterday.
It has been compulsory for all judges to retire at 68 since 1980 and Dr Cullen said the change would bring New Zealand into line with similar jurisdictions such as Australia and Britain.
"The move will assist the retention of our most experienced and capable judges and encourage recruitment of senior practitioners," he said.
"People expect to live and work longer these days and judges are no different."
Legislation would be introduced this year.
