The compulsory retirement age for judges is being raised to 70.
Attorney-General Michael Cullen says the move means the most experienced and capable judges will be able to work for another two years. He believes it will also encourage the recruitment of senior legal practitioners to the bench. Dr Cullen says most people expect to live and work longer these days and judges are no different.
The change brings New Zealand into line with comparative overseas countries such as Australia and the United Kingdom.
The compulsory retirement age for judges in New Zealand has been 68 since 1980.
