Wiremu Te Aroha Te Whanau Curtis, 17, who is charged with abusing three-year-old Nia, was remanded in the Auckland District Court on bail today.
He was ordered to reappear on Wednesday in Rotorua District Court.

He could then spend the entire duration of the trial in jail.
The other four people charged with abusing Nia remain in custody after appearing in Rotorua District Court last week.
William Curtis, 47, and Michael Paul Pearson, 19, agreed to be remanded in custody for a pre-depositions hearing on September 17 after their bail applications were denied.
Oriwa Terrina Kemp, 17, did not consent to a remand in custody and will come up before the court again on Wednesday.
The bail application of Michael William Curtis, 21, was adjourned to Wednesday after his lawyer, Nikki Utting, said she had further inquiries to make.
