Jail was inevitable for an Ashburton man convicted of his eighth drink-driving charge, Ashburton District Court Judge John Bisphan said.
He remanded Dale William Roland Robinson, 33, in custody pending sentence on May 23. "Prison is inevitable; you might as well get it started now," Judge Bisphan told the meat worker.
Robinson also admitted a charge of disqualified driving, for which he had eight previous convictions.
Police said Robinson was stopped on Peter St on March 26 and found to have 606 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath. He told the officers he was dropping off a vacuum cleaner.
Defence counsel Gretchen Hart had sought bail for her client, who she said was not a flight risk.
