The Government is considering an investigation into the appointment of Labour candidate Steven Ching as a justice of the peace.
The Auckland businessman - who at 42 on the party list has a chance of becoming Labour's first Chinese MP - has admitted obstructing a fisheries officer.
Associate Justice Minister Rick Barker told Parliament Mr Ching would be "treated without fear or favour".
