It may be John Key's old primary school, but that will not save it from the chop.
Education Minister Anne Tolley has decided that Aorangi School in Christchurch should close.
Locals have been fighting to save the school, but Ms Tolley says it needs more than $2 million to upgrade its dilapidated classrooms, which cannot be justified in the current economic climate.
Ms Tolley says the school also has a falling roll and its community is served by other nearby schools.
