John Kristoffer Villegas Chua, from Cebu City in the Philippines, died when the CTV building collapsed in the Christchurch earthquake.
John's family members, Beauty and Bill Chua, said in an interview with ABS-CBN that he had just attended orientation at the King's Education language school on the third floor of the building, when the earthquake struck.
Five other Filipinos were studying at the institute in preparation for their New Zealand Nursing Board exams on March 13.
John, 24, is survived by his wife and young son.
