A woman was seriously injured after being attacked by eight pig dogs while jogging this afternoon.
The 36-year-old was set upon as she jogged along a rural road in Arapuni, 37km east of Te Awamutu, about 1pm, Sergeant Jason Shailer of Putaruru police said.
A friend who saw what was happening called for help but the dogs had left the scheme by the time emergency services arrived.
The victim received multiple bites to her scalp, arms and legs and was flown to Waikato Hospital by the Westpac Waikato rescue service.
"There were serious injuries pretty much all over her body," Mr Shailer said.
Waikato Hospital spokeswoman Mary Anne Gill said the woman was in a stable condition and would undergo surgery later today.
Mr Shailer said the dogs had been seized and their owner had signed an order of destruction.
The dogs would be put down either today or tomorrow.
A decision on whether the owner would be charged in relation to the incident would be made tomorrow, Mr Shailer said.
He said it was still unclear why the dogs stopped the attack on the woman.
Ms Gill said the woman's husband wished to thank everyone at the scene who helped his wife.
