KEY POINTS:
A tougher economic climate could mean students will struggle to find work this summer.
Student Job Search is advertising 20 per cent fewer vacancies, which it says is a reflection of employment market uncertainty. "The flow-on effect from an uncertain economy is now effecting day-to-day hiring activity among businesses. The supply and demand issue of fewer jobs has accelerated with the amount of tertiary students finishing exams and seeking work," Student Job Search marketing and communication manager Lorna McConnon said.
"The last time we noticed this trend was in the late-1990s when the economy was also uncertain," she said.
To find work Student Job Search is advising students to be more flexible in the type of work they are seeking, and for how long.
"For example they may need to do two shorter-duration jobs over the summer rather than last year when there was plenty of work that lasted right through."
