Jetstar ticks off crew over urinator

Jetstar cabin crew have been reprimanded for their handling of a drunken New Zealand man who urinated over fellow passengers during a flight.

Spokeswoman Andrea Wait said the airline had done a "full investigation" of the incident, including contacting customers in "direct contact with the offending passenger".

"Jetstar has taken this incident very seriously and we sincerely apologise to any customers affected," she said yesterday.

"We are disappointed that the normal process that would be followed in such circumstances was not followed on this occasion, and our cabin crew have been reminded of our processes.

"Jetstar has taken immediate steps to prevent the recurrence of such inappropriate behaviour."

The admission came as a photo of the urinator - who has not been identified - was supplied by a fellow passenger.

The man was travelling from Auckland to Singapore last week when he emptied his bladder about six hours into the 11-hour flight. He urinated on to the aircraft carpet, a man's leg, and a woman's scarf.

Jetstar crew gave wipes to the man who was sprayed and moved him to another seat, but passenger Amos Chapple was left sitting next to him for the rest of the flight.

"We were sitting next to a pool of urine for a good 5 hours. You couldn't see a puddle but you could tell it was there. It was pretty outrageous," Mr Chapple said.

Jessica Kay, who has since binned her sodden scarf, said it took 20 minutes for anyone to respond to her calls for assistance. "I got given a sick bag and I asked for the urine to be cleaned up but the air hostess giggled and never came back."

The man left the plane with only a captain's warning and Singapore police were not called.

Singapore criminal lawyer Josephus Tan said the man would probably have faced a fine, but if there was a specific female target involved the penalty could increase to a year in jail.
