Two boys have been injured after a collision between two boats off Pauanui overnight.
An 11-year-old was flown to Auckland's Starship Hospital with broken ribs, a broken jaw and upper palate, and other injuries.
A 12-year-old was taken to Thames Hospital for observation.
Tairua Police Constable Richard Jellyman says one boat was being driven by a 16-year-old with a 12-year-old passenger, while the other had two 11-year-olds on board.
He says police are concerned the boys did not have the relevant experience to be out on the water.
The crash, which occurred at about 7pm, is believed to have involved an inflatable boat and a jetski.
Mr Jellyman says boaties need to watch their speed and make sure they stick to the sea lanes when out on the water.
