KEY POINTS:
A promoter of New Zealand's jazz scene, broadcaster Haydn Sherley, has died at the age of 83.
Mr Sherley was well known for his jazz show, In a Mellow Tone, which broadcast for 30 years on National Radio.
According to the Radio New Zealand website, his career began in 1953 when he joined the Broadcasting Service, becoming a trainer of announcers and a senior executive producer at National Radio.
In 1989, he was awarded the Queens Service Medal for services to broadcasting.
He officially retired in 1983, but continued to present his show until March this year.
