KEY POINTS:
Rodney police are hunting for a man who committed a "vicious" sexual assault on a Japanese woman in an Orewa park last night.
The woman was attacked and sexually violated near Maygrove Park at about 9pm.
Detective Phillip Cox said the victim was "severely shaken" by the assault.
"The Japanese victim is presently resting and recovering from her ordeal. She is receiving medical treatment, and is being supported by close friends as well as Victim Support."
Detective Cox said ten police officers were working on the case and called for anyone who noticed suspicious behaviour to come forward.
"We are especially interested in hearing from persons who regularly frequent the area of Maygrove Park, at around 9.00pm in the evenings, or anyone who lives nearby," he said.
"Because of existing language factors there has been limited opportunity to obtain a detailed description of the attacker. Police will be meeting with the victim again today before releasing any description of any alleged suspect."
