KEY POINTS:
The man accused of murdering Marie Jamieson came to police attention as a victim last year, when he was attacked with a knife by an ex-partner who subsequently killed herself.
The 51-year-old man, who has name suppression, was attacked at his home in Sunnyvale, West Auckland, in October and sustained cuts.
Police became involved and his ex-partner was charged with grievous bodily harm against him and possession of the knife. Court documents seen by the Weekend Herald show the woman appeared in the Waitakere District Court on the charges that month. She killed herself at her Glen Eden home three weeks later.
The couple had a 10-year-old daughter who was cared for by the murder-accused until just before his arrest for the 2001 murder of Ms Jamieson eight days ago. The daughter is now being cared for by relatives.
A Herald death notice from the accused man called his ex-partner "a long time friend".
The accused man appeared in the Waitakere District Court yesterday where Judge Heemi Taumaunu declined an application for bail after opposition from the police. Judge Taumaunu suppressed all legal submissions and the reasons for his decision.
An interim name suppression order was continued after the accused's lawyer Barry Hart indicated he was to file an application in the High Court challenging a decision made on Wednesday by Judge Lisa Tremewan to decline it. Mr Hart indicated he would appeal the decision to decline bail to the High Court as well.
Ms Jamieson, a 23-year-old hairdresser, was last seen at the Gull Service Station in Kingsland on February 10, 2001. Her naked body was found behind a factory in Ranui nine days later. Police have said the man became a suspect in the murder in April and have attributed the arrest to a DNA "match".
