Jailed man raped two girls in 24 hours

An 11-year-old girl abducted and raped by a Christchurch teenager threw herself from a moving car to escape, a court has heard.

Loburn man William Stewart, 19, was sentenced in the High Court at Christchurch today to 15 years in prison, with a minimum term of eight years.

He earlier admitted to raping a 17-year-old near Christchurch Airport before kidnapping the 11-year-old hours later last October.

Name suppression for Stewart, who pleaded guilty to the charges last November, was lifted at sentencing today.

The court heard how his 11-year-old victim threw herself from a moving car to escape.

In sentencing, Justice Cameron Mander told the court her efforts to save herself had not saved her family from trauma.

Justice Mander said Stewart had an interest in extreme pornography that included children, rape and strangulation, which it was clear he had acted out.

Defence Counsel Liz Bulger had pushed for permanent name suppression to prevent undue hardship to Stewart's family.

But Justice Mander found that was outweighed by the need for open reporting.

The judge spared Stewart a sentence of preventive detention because of his age.
