A man who was found with a pipe bomb in the boot of his car in Northland late last year was sentenced at Waitakere District Court today to 10 months imprisonment.
Brian John Cooke, 36, unemployed, from Wellsford, north of Auckland, was earlier convicted of possession of an explosive in a public place, possession of an offensive weapon (an axe), possession of methamphetamine, and possession of utensils for methamphetamine use (a glass pipe).
Police found the items during a search of Cooke's car following a routine stop in Waitangi on December 7.
Upon opening the car boot, police recognised a detonator cord and called in the bomb squad.
The area was cordoned off, causing long traffic delays until the bomb squad disabled the device.
