KEY POINTS:
A convicted child sex offender is facing a jail term for breaching a court order which banned him from having unsupervised contact with children.
Michael Justin Brodrick, 66, from Whangarei, appeared in the Whangarei District Court on Tuesday charged with breaching a court order.
Brodrick was jailed for nine years in 1997 for sex offences against children.
In December 2006, the High Court at Whangarei ordered that Brodrick was not to have contact with any person aged under 16 for five years unless under the direct supervision of an adult who was fully aware of his previous offending and had been approved by the probation officer.
This week he pleaded guilty to breaching the supervision order and was remanded in custody until sentencing on December 14.
The Department of Corrections is seeking a term of imprisonment as punishment for the breach.
The breach was discovered during a home visit by the probation officer, who found two boys aged 12 or younger, and one toddler in Brodrick's home this month.
Three adults were also present, but none had been approved as supervising adults by the probation officer.
Brodrick admitted the toddler and its mother were staying at the address and had been for a number of days. He did not offer any explanation as to why the children were staying at his home.
Also, last month a nurse from Northland Health Medical Outreach also witnessed Brodrick with a toddler unsupervised.
This week the court heard that Brodrick had been warned, leaving the department with no alternative but to take action.
