TRAFFIC
Motorists heading north of Wellsford this weekend are urged to use SH16 as an alternative route. It can be reached from the Northwestern Motorway and from Dairy Flat via Kahikatea Flat Rd. Signs will advise of the best route to use. Passing lanes at Johnsons Hill, Waiwera Hill and Hatfields Beach will be closed tomorrow and Monday afternoons.
TODAY
* Royal Easter Show
Pole-climbing competitions continue at 11am and 1pm; pedigree judging begins at the National Cat Show in the Logan Campbell Centre; woodchopping will be held in the Sports Arena from 10am; and showjumping begins at 3.30pm in the Royal Arena.
* Glenbrook Vintage Railway celebrates its silver jubilee this weekend with a Festival of Steam. Displays include stationary and traction engines, model railways, vintage cars and tractors, music and crafts, and children's entertainment. Clydesdale ploughing championships are nearby. * The Montana Waiheke Island of Jazz festival boasts 18 concerts and events in restaurants all over the island. The festival runs until Monday and features top international acts, although singer Ingrid Lucia and the Flying Neutrinos have pulled out because of her illness.
* The Easter Food, Wine and Beer Festival begins at Ellerslie Racecourse today and continues on Monday (the Auckland Racing Club's Jaguar Easter Handicap will be run today). Beer stalls range from micro-breweries to international brands, there is a variety of food and wine stalls, and jazz bands will entertain. Admission is $15.
TOMORROW
* Royal Easter Show
Pole-climbing is the main attraction in the Royal Arena until 4pm, when the showjumping competition resumes. In the Sports Arena, woodchopping competitions include the standing and underhand chop, team races and the Jack and Jill championship.
* Help the park rangers at Ambury Regional Park to clean up the foreshore. Wear sturdy boots and bring your lunch and a drink. The clean-up starts at 10am at the park at Mangere Bridge. Call Parksline (09) 303-1530 for more information.
* Skidfest, the ultimate burnout show, starts at 10am in the Manukau Sports Bowl in Te Irirangi Rd. For more information call (09) 528-0575.
* A truck and transport show has been organised at Motat from 1pm to raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
MONDAY
* Royal Easter Show
Showjumping starts at 10am in the Royal Arena. Woodchopping winds up from 10am in the Sports Arena, and the Greater Auckland Chorus entertains on the Superstage at 12.30pm.
* Ways to clean beaches and streams will be discussed at a public meeting of the Royal Forest and Bird Protection Society, 7.45pm, Senior Citizens Hall behind the Takapuna Library.
