The cost of renting space in telephone exchanges will be perhaps the cheapest commercial rent in Auckland.
The Commerce Commission yesterday ruled that Telecom could charge rival internet companies a monthly fee of up to $20 a square metre to lease space in its exchanges for their own equipment.
Bayleys Realty Group spokesman Neil Prentice said this compared favourably to lease prices for industrial warehouse space which he said could range from $100 a square metre to $220 a square metre.
A square metre of top office space in central Auckland could cost $300 to $400 a month.
The Commerce Commission sets exchange rental space at from $20 a square metre in Auckland and Wellington down to $11 a month in non-metropolitan areas.
