The Ports of Auckland company's plan for a residential development along the western end of Westhaven Marine has drawn serious opposition. A public meeting decided to form the Westhaven Community Action Group to campaign against the project. The three-storey buildings on top of a partly underground carpark will allow for 26 apartments with the possibility of a further 10.
The port company needs resource consent to allow for residential use, which is not a permitted activity under the present zoning. The Ponsonby, Richmond and Victoria yacht clubs formed the action group along with operators of marine businesses. Objections must be in by September 16. Details of how to object are on the Ponsonby Cruising Club website and submission forms are available at the Ponsonby Cruising Club.
Boat built in hour
Preparations have started for the second annual Boating Industry Training Organisation build-a-boat challenge. The date is Saturday, September 14 and the venue is again Pah Farm at Kawau Island. Teams of four (two must be apprentices) get just an hour to build a boat that can carry two people and be both paddled and sailed. Materials are tightly restricted and no power tools can be used. BITO general manager Robert Brooke says the contest is a great way to foster good relationships between employers and employees. More than 45 teams are expected to take part. For information about the challenge call Anne Hazlewood on (09) 360 0056.
