The Queensland-based Riviera Group, one of Australia's biggest powerboat manufacturers, has denied rumours it is to be sold to the Brunswick Corporation of the United States.
"Our founder and chairman Bill Barry-Cotter is confident of our long-term future and committed to the continual growth of the business in Australia, the South Pacific and beyond," Riviera marketing manager Peter Jenkins said.
Record sector
The American magazine Power & Motoryacht says record numbers of megayachts (craft 24.4m and longer) maintained for private individuals and corporations are being built. From just over 2000 six years ago, there are more than 5000 in the water today. European yards account for 60 per cent of production, with US and Canadian yards building about 20 per cent and the remainder spread throughout the world.
Internet success
Research in the United States shows the internet portal boats.com has been a huge success. The National Marine Manufacturers Association and the Marine Retailers Association of America both endorse the site. In June more than 750,000 people visited the website.
Still popular
Billed as the longest-running regatta, Cowes Week from August 4 to 11 has drawn more than 1000 entries. The first Cowes Week race was on August 10, 1826.
WaterWatch
Water skiing is the subject of this weekend's reminder from the ARC Maritime Operations Centre. Remember, it is a three-person sport and an observer must be on board to communicate between the driver and the skier. This rule applies even when towing from a personal water-craft.
Scheduled activity this weekend includes:
Saturday: Victoria keeler championships continue (VCC). Sunday: Richmond short-handed race (RYC).
Organisations and individuals planning activity on or in the water of either the Manukau or Waitemata harbours should register with Hans Swete on (09) 361 2405 or call ENVIROLINE 0800 80 60 40
