The 2002-03 Around Alone will now start from New York on Sunday, September 15. The switch from Newport, Rhode Island, has been made to make the start of the ocean classic a fitting finale to the Sail for America regatta. In the leadup to the classic, thousands of yachts will sail on New York Harbour to mark the anniversary of the World Trade Centre tragedy.
Ireland afloat
Ireland is to continue investing heavily in the marine leisure sector, says Frank Fahey, Minister of Marine and Natural Resources. The Fianna Fail parliamentarian says his country's future lies in sea activities with his department as the main driving force for economic development.
Hitch-hiker alert
The US Fish and Wildlife Service has launched a national programme to increase awareness of the dangers from the spread of aquatic nuisance species through the country's waterways. The "Stop Aquatic Hitch-hikers" campaign offers advice, help and voluntary guidelines for aquatic recreation users.
Sail Malaysia
The Malaysian Government has moved to develop the country as a yachting destination. Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has escorted a group of Saudi Arabian investors to the yachting base at Langkwai and announced plans for a planned new marina at Pantai Kok.

There's plenty of action on Lake Pupuke today as the North Harbour Freshwater Championships for the Optimist, P-Class, Starling and 29er classes are sailed. Prize-giving is at the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron. Saturday and Sunday: Family cruising weekend (WTYS).
