Auckland Volunteer Coastguard and the Navy Hydrographic Branch have produced two small-format charts aimed at making life easier for the recreational boater. One covers the Auckland to Waiheke and Coromandel area, the other takes in Auckland to Kawau Island. They show how to make a safe passage and explain what's available and what to see and do for boaties when they reach their anchorage. The charts complement the Bay of Islands edition produced last year, and more are planned. Order from Coastguard on (09) 357 1326. Members $45, non-members $50 (delivered to your door).
Finish alert
Boaties planning to follow the Volvo Ocean Race fleet in to Auckland after the leg from Hobart are warned to give the V60s plenty of sea room. The short leg across the Tasman is expected to finish on January 3. However, the message is to remember the boats will be racing at their limit to be first across the finish line at Orakei Wharf. They won't be able to get out of your way. The warning applies particularly to powerboats running alongside the race leaders.
Blake exclusive
The December Inside Sailing programme on CNN will feature a tribute to Sir Peter Blake, including exclusive footage of his voyage aboard Seamaster to Antarctica before the Amazon trip that led to his murder. The show will also cover the America's Cup preparation and the Southern Ocean leg of the Volvo Ocean race and the environmental study the fleet is undertaking. Details on CNN's Inside Sailing.
Water watch
James McPetrie and his team at the Auckland Regional Council Maritime Operations Centre report near-exemplary behaviour on both harbours last weekend. Their message for skippers of craft of all kinds: you are in charge and legally responsible for the safety of the boat and everyone on board.
The skipper is also responsible for complying with all the relevant rules and regulations. You must ensure you have on board the necessary equipment for the trip you intend to take. Have a chart of the area you plan to visit and it is essential to leave a note with someone responsible detailing where you are going, how many people are on board and when you expect to return.
* Clubs and organisations planning activities on the Waitemata or Manukau should register with the ARC Enviroline on 0800 80 60 40
