Noted marine historian Bill Laxon is the new deputy chair of the National Maritime Museum Trust Board. He replaces John Keegan, who has retired. Laxon has been a board member since the museum's inception in 1981. His books include Crossed Flags, a history of the New Zealand Shipping Company, Steamships Down the Firth and Steamships on the Manukau. His latest effort is the brochure Portholes and Passports, produced to support the museum's exhibition about the history of cruising on luxury liners.
Trouble-shooting
Now is the time to sign on with Coastguard Boating Education for a course in engine troubleshooting. There is a half-day course on outboards and four four-hour sessions on inboard engines and vital systems. General manager Greg Frampton says the off-season is the time for boaters to learn how to deal with many common problems. Aucklanders should call (09) 489 1850. Other people can use 0800 40 80 90.
Victorian fight
Australia's Boating Industries Association is gearing up to fight a proposed ban that will stop recreational and professional fishing, personal watercraft and scuba diving in many of Victoria's marine parks. The BIA is soliciting signatures opposing the ban and plans a public relations campaign that will include local meetings, media initiatives and letters to the editor.
