At the America's Cup Hall of Fame induction ceremony at the Auckland Museum this week, the late Stanley Rosenfeld, one of the most famous cup photographers, and bankers Malin Burnham and Sir Michael Fay were added to the ranks of regatta greats. The black-tie gala was a big night for our 2002 Young Sailor of the Year, Thomas Ashley, who was quizzed on his achievements and aspirations by Herreshoff Museum president Halsey C. Herreshoff in front of the rich and famous. Ashley was unfazed by the occasion, as was Yachting New Zealand president Geoff Thorpe, who accepted a $5000 cheque from the organisers.
New four-stroke
Suzuki Marine in the United States used the Miami International Boat Show earlier this month for the world release of three new V6 four-stroke outboards. The company says one of the new outboards, the 250hp (DF250), is the most powerful motor built by the company. The others are the 200hp (DF200) and the 225hp (DF225). Each motor has digital electronic fuel injection, which is controlled by an on-board computer.
Water-watch
Harbourmaster James McPetrie and America's Cup race director Harold Bennett were unhappy about the behaviour of sections of the spectator fleet on the Hauraki Gulf last weekend. During the long wait for a start in Race 2 on Sunday, a lot of boats strayed on to the racecourse, which added to the delay while the boats were being cleared. The plea from both men for this weekend is to keep checking Channel 18 for race information and course changes. It is essential that spectator boat skippers know what's happening with the race to ensure this problem does not happen again. Other activity:
Saturday: Summer cruising race (RYC); Two-handed race to Islington Bay (Weiti BC); Printing Express mullet boat series 4 race to Hobsonville (PCC).
Saturday and Sunday: America's Cup regatta continues (RNZYS); 470, Mistral, Tornado and 49er regatta continues (GHYC).
Sunday: Return race from Kawau (BBYC); Tri-series, Taikata (TSC).
* Clubs and organisations planning events on the Waitemata or Manukau harbours should register with the Auckland Council Enviroline on 09 366 2070.
