The H28 Yacht Owners' Association celebrates the 30th anniversary of the class in New Zealand this year. Designed by the famous American L. Francis Herreshoff in 1942, the boats were built here in GRP by Compass Yachts from the early 70s. Of the 300-plus produced, many are still sailing competitively in Auckland, Wellington, Nelson and Christchurch. The association is holding an open day tomorrow from 10am to 2pm at Pier X, Westhaven. Cigarette builds around 85 high-performance boats a year and employs 110 people.
