National Maritime Museum CEO Larry Robbins has taken to heart a suggestion following the Weekend Marine article (February 16-17) on the Auckland asset.
Howick reader and keen yachtsman Wouter Beekhuizen, reflecting on his Dutch background, has suggested the museum could honour some of our top designers.
Robbins agrees the idea of a series of theme weeks devoted to designers and featuring on-the-water examples of their work would attract huge interest. The Logans and Baileys could be appropriately honoured along with contemporary designers such as Alan Wright, Dennis Ganley, Laurie Davidson, Bruce Farr, Jim Young, John Spencer - the list goes on. The museum will look at the project for early next year, after the America's Cup summer.
Radio racers
The North Shore Radio Yacht Squadron races two classes of model yacht from 1pm to dusk each weekend on the Quarry Lake next to North Shore Hospital. The international 1-metre class is raced on Saturdays and the Marblehead class on Sunday. Both classes are sailed under international yacht racing rules.
Squadron spokesman Bob Atkinson says some of the America's Cup campaign stars have been known to join in to try out some tactical moves.
Waterwatch
Highlight of this weekend's action on the water is the re-run today of the Yanmar Icebreaker keelboat race postponed from earlier in the year because of bad weather. Forty boats are expected, with pre-start off Orakei Wharf from 9.45am.
Saturday and Sunday: Olympic classes training at Shakespeare Bay.
Saturday: City of Sails Optimist, P-Class, Starling and 29er at Kohimarama (KYC); Cruising race (PCC); Gulf Harbour regatta day (GHYC); Harbour race (VCC); Cruising race to Hobsonville (RAYC); Yanmar Icebreaker (RAYC).
Sunday: Te Kouma and return race (RYC); M-Class Olympic course (RNZYS); ff15 and open division (RAYC).
