Attracting much interest at the Viaduct Basin is the beautiful blue ketch Salperton, completing its fit-out before being handed over to its European owner later this month. At 53m (173.8ft) the yacht, from Henderson's Alloy Yachts, is the biggest pleasure craft built in New Zealand. The mainmast is 60m tall.
17th coming up
Entry forms are out for the country's oldest established fishing contest, the 17th Lion Red Furuno, at Pah Farm, Kawau, from March 21 to 23. The Furuno is New Zealand's biggest. It attracted more than 3000 entrants last year and the organisers are expecting similar numbers this time. The big prize for the contest is a Haines Hunter SF535 powered by a 115hp two-stroke Yamaha. It comes on a DMW trailer complete with Penn fishing gear.
Lunch on Te Mana
The New Zealand Herald Foundation is giving 230 guests the chance to attend a lunch aboard HMNZS Te Mana to raise funds for Surf Lifesaving Northern Region and Auckland Volunteer Coastguard. The Governor-General, Dame Silvia Cartwright, will host the luncheon while Te Mana is anchored off North Head as a marker for yachts in the New Zealand Herald Auckland Anniversary Regatta on Monday, January 28. Tickets cost $180 each. Bookings are essential. Inquiries to (09) 373 6449.
Water-Watch
The message from the ARC maritime operations centre for people planning activity afloat this weekend is to watch the weather. Harbourmaster James McPetrie emphasises that boaties should check the marine forecast and, if the conditions seem unsuitable for their craft, stay at home.
Saturday night's concert to welcome the Volvo Ocean Race fleet to Auckland at the Viaduct Basin will attract lots of seaborne music-lovers. Again, the message is to be careful and take heed of advice from the on-the-water Coastguard and police patrols.
* Clubs and organisations planning activities on the Waitemata or Manukau should register with ARC Enviroline on 0800 80 60 40.
