The Weekend Marine feature on boat security (April 7-8) has had a positive result for the Auckland maritime police section. Sergeant-in-charge Martin Paget says two stolen jetskis and a stolen runabout have been recovered this week as his team followed up leads provided by the public. The unit also recovered a stolen outboard and other marine equipment. One person has been arrested and more charges will follow.
Paget is also concerned about the number of people using their boats for transport because they are too drunk to cope with a vehicle on the road. Two cases were dealt with this week and charges are being considered. He warns that the chances of an accident while under the influence afloat are far greater than on the road.
