The marine industry is getting behind the 75th anniversary repeat circumnavigation of the country by the launch Ruamano, as featured in Weekend Marine. Retiring Heart Foundation medical director Professor Boyd Swinburn says the Cruise-Aid for Hearts voyage is being backed by the Lion Foundation and has received products or services from Safety at Sea, Line 7, Land Information (charts), Electronic Navigation, Transmission and Diesel, Burnsco, Lexicon and Boating New Zealand. Ruamano is at the National Maritime Museum today and will leave from her berth at 5 pm on Christmas Day, returning to Auckland on February 16.
New York action
The New York National Boat Show from January 6-14 will feature more than 1000 boats, ranging from top-of-the-line luxury motor-yachts to the latest in smaller craft. Interactive displays will include a full day devoted to safety, a scuba tank, a backyard bass-casting contest and boat giveaways. The bring-back-the-pool decision for the 2001 Auckland Boating Show could well be a plunge in the right direction.
Expandable cat
A sports-fishing catamaran with an expandable centre section was unveiled at the Paris Boat Show. Designed by naval architect Guy Saillard, it is aimed at fast trips to remote fishing and diving sites. The 8m cat has uniform sections in its aluminium hulls, from 3m behind the bow to the stern. It can be lengthened to 11.8m by moving the bow and stern sections apart and inserting a new section. Called the HCT 800, its two Hamilton jet units can turn the boat a little over its own length and it stops from 20 knots in 8m.
