KEY POINTS:
The environmental friendliness test.
This week: Alex Swney, Auckland mayoral candidate
What are you doing personally to make a difference?
* Introduced the free hybrid electric buses in Queen Street (the red City Circuit buses) that now carry 1.25 million people every year (the most successful bus service in Auckland!).
* Installed power saving lighting system in our family home.
* We compost rather than use the waste disposal unit.
* On our coastal block we use rainwater supply rather than the mains system.
* We are also planting native trees on our coastal block.
* We use recyclable shopping bags.
* We buy organic food where possible (we're nuts about the Allpress organic coffee especially!).
And of course the carbon footprint of my Vespa is extremely small! I use it daily as opposed to the family car.
What more could you do?
We are costing, but have not yet installed, solar panels. I could trade in my Vespa for the just released electric scooter. When Karen Walker's Swanndri range comes out with a new hemp-blend shirt, I will be there.
What is your biggest environmental sin?
I haven't cut the umbilical cord to our family car. It may be sitting mostly unused in my garage due to my Vespa travel but with two little girls I still need this backstop.
Global Warming - True or False?
True.
