Group general manager, Salthouse Marine Group
What has been your best moment in business?
I think they are as many as they are varied. Sometimes it is the smallest thing, such as feedback from staff about improvements within the organisation, an email from a staff member on how an overseas boat show is going and sending them news from the factory.
There is the look on clients' faces when they see their boats finished and their expectations exceeded, walking down a jetty on the other side of the world and seeing one of our boats. Possibly the best feeling is being involved in a business my father started and sharing his passion for boats.
When did you become a manager?
Probably the moment I decided to mix motherhood and work. I worked for human resource consultants Teesdale, Meuli & Co for nine and a half years before taking this position.
I managed administration, finance and IT and gained some very useful knowledge in employment related issues.
What was the most important lesson you learned on your way up?
To listen and respect the opinions of others. Another perspective is always good and it helps to build commitment, along with a caring culture.
How have you dealt with the pitfalls in your career?
I set long term goals for myself as it helps give me focus. Things may change along the way but I'm always striving towards my goals, therefore I feel I have direction.
What makes your day at work?
We have a group of passionate people working together to make an awesome product. I get a real buzz out of going through the factory and seeing what developments they have made to the boats.
What annoys you most?
A "can't do it"attitude. The worst thing you can tell me is "it can't be done" - I'll die trying to prove you wrong.
If you were starting over, what would you be?
I'd be a lot smarter. I would have listened to my parents' advice and got my degree when everyone else did.
However, there are no shortcuts in life and most of life's experiences are learned as we go along. I love what I am doing.
What management wisdom is most overrated?
That's a tough question. If wisdom is an accumulation of knowledge and learning, then perhaps the answer is not to assume that any one management theory can hold the answer. While there is an incredible amount of management theory and case study analysis at our fingertips, each situation has a unique set of circumstances.
What will be the big business issue of the next decade?
Maximising the potential of our industry on the global market. New Zealand is a special country with huge potential. Team New Zealand has played a huge role in promoting New Zealand to the world and we owe them a great deal.
How do you relax?
With good friends, good wine and good food.
