KEY POINTS:
Roger Kahui, the man accused of subjecting a Pukekohe woman to a four-and-a-half-hour sex attack, told police he later "felt like shit" and wished he could go back to that night.
"I wish I hadn't done that," Kahui told police during a videotaped interview shortly before his arrest.
"I feel sorry for what I put her through. It's not like me to do that sort of shit, you know.
"Not only have I put her through so much misery, I've also put my family through [it]. I wish I could just go back to that night. Things might have turned out differently."
The interview was played yesterday to a jury in the High Court at Auckland, where Kahui is facing 26 charges, including sexual violation, indecent assault and kidnapping of the Pukekohe woman.
Kahui told police he had gone to the woman's house on June 13 with the intention of getting some money to buy drugs. "My intention wasn't to go there and rape her. All I wanted was just to get some money to support my P habit."
Police say Kahui, armed with a hammer and scissors, forced his way inside the house after asking to use the phone.
Once he got inside, the victim, who cannot be identified, started screaming.
So, Kahui said, he tackled her to the floor and punched her in the head several times. It was then things went "haywire".
"Something else just changed. It wasn't me, it was another person like the devil coming out of me," he said.
Police say the woman was then raped and sexually violated in her bedroom and living room.
The woman was later handcuffed and driven away from her home. Kahui wanted to go to an ATM to get money but the woman escaped and ran to a petrol station for help.
The jury was shown video footage of the terrified victim running in with her hands still cuffed.
Kahui was arrested the following week after police identified him through the DNA he left at the woman's house.
The defence is expected to open its case today.
