KEY POINTS:
A techno savvy student, caught on a security camera downloading porn on to library computers, has been suspended from a prominent Auckland secondary school.
The Mt Albert Grammar School pupil was able to breach tight security systems to download explicit pictures on to a computer in his dormitory room a fortnight ago.
The next day, the 15-year-old spread the pornographic material to all the computers in the library from a portable memory stick, and showed a group of fellow Year 11 boys.
Explicit images appeared on five computers in the library and the student was caught on security camera.
School headmaster Dale Burden said after a complaint, investigation and interview the boy was stood down for five days, which coincided with NCEA study leave.
"Did the kid know they weren't allowed to do this? Yes, obviously," Burden said.
"He was very IT savvy. He managed to get around our blocks and basically manipulated the blocking device.
"We could have ignored it but that sends a bad message to everybody else. "He knew what the consequences would be when he did it. He knew the school's stand on it and thought he could get away with it, I suppose."
Burden was surprised by the security breach, having been blocked from an innocent soccer website.
"Not that I do it during work time," he said.
