From the strange, strange world of the Trade Me message boards:
"My son's Year 11 science teacher last week lit a cigarette in the class and let it burn down as an experiment to show them how your lungs absorb the nicotine by using cotton wool for it to seep into. All the boys were standing at the front of the desk when he did it and my son and another boy moved off to sit at the back of the class. What a stupid thing to do! They were learning about lung capacity and the like and I can understand the concept, but to light it in a classroom? My son had heart surgery as a baby and even though the teacher may or may not be aware of that, it was still a stupid thing to do. What do you think?"

Athletes at this year's Olympics are being offered personalised Beijing 2008 postage stamps with their own faces on them. The souvenir stamps are being snapped up in the athletes' village, say coaches and officials. "They are very popular. Some are buying 10 or 11 sheets," said post office worker Li Qiang, who for 45 yuan ($6.60) for a sheet of 12 will take your photo and superimpose it on the rectangular Olympic-themed stamps.

Officers say the goggles were accidentally taken from a table at an event at a local park. The glasses are used by police to demonstrate to high school students and parents how alcohol impairs a driver's vision and judgment.

A growing number of London cinema owners are going sour on popcorn in the movies. Some want to have popcorn-free screenings and others want to ban it altogether. "I will de-popcorn every new venue I acquire," said Daniel Broch. "It has a disproportionate influence on the space in terms of its overwhelming smell, the cultural idea of it and the operational problems created by the mess it produces. There is no way in which it fits with the culturally sophisticated brand I wish to sell." Popcorn is a cinema's single most profitable product, because of the bulk it produces from relatively small kernels and it also, conveniently, makes customers thirsty for drinks.
