Happy birthday, office cubicle: In 1968, the world's first modular office system - or, as it's come to be known, the cubicle - was rolled out. Inventor Robert Propst intended it to bring a sense of respect to the individual worker, creating privacy and offering protection from the indignities - not to mention the constant glare of the boss - that the bullpen office configuration imposed. As a result, cubicles were a hard sell when first introduced. Today, they account for 60 per cent to 70 per cent of the office furniture market.

Jim Smith says he's never met a Jim Smith he didn't like. And he's met more than most people. That's because the 71-year-old is in Pittsburgh for the Jim Smith Society Fun Fest, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported. The society was formed in 1969 by a local Jim Smith to celebrate one of the most common names in the United States. Today, the group boasts about 1900 members. About two dozen Jim Smiths held a golf tournament to kick off the festivities, and planned to go sightseeing and visit Pittsburgh museums. To join the Jim Smith Society, potential members must, naturally, be named Jim Smith, but even this rule is flexible. Two women, both named Jimmy Anne Smith, have joined. Jamie is also an acceptable name. (Source: AP)

The Daily Mail says the British Government has more than 1000 flimsy reasons to enter a private home or business and nearly half have been introduced since Labour came to power 11 years ago. They include the right to invade homes to see if Britons' pot plants have pests or do not have a "plant passport" (Plant Health England Order 2005); survey a home and garden to see if the hedge is too high (Anti-Social Behaviour Act 2003); raid a house to check if unlicensed gambling is taking place (Gambling Act 2005 Inspection Regulations 2007); and seize fridges without the correct energy rating (Energy Information Household Refrigerators and Freezers Regulations 2004).
