A reader really tried to do public transport. "I needed to get from West Harbour to Newmarket, so armed with my computer printout from Maxx transport I arrived at the bus stop excited at the prospect of my using public transport. The plan was to catch a bus to Henderson with a half-hour window to catch a train to Newmarket. When the bus didn't arrive after half an hour I called a taxi. While waiting for the taxi the bus chugged by 40min late which would not have got me to the train on time. After doing the sums with the taxi to take me to Henderson then two fares on the train it worked out to about $7 more to taxi to Newmarket in a quarter of the time. My reason for going to Newmarket was to pick up my car that was being serviced. I really tried to do public transport, but 'god bless the private car'."

Reading ocean liner company Cunard's newsletter, issued to passengers visiting on the Queen Victoria, Rob Scott noticed the liner suggested shopping in Queen St or Parnell, where you can buy "stuffed koalas, woollens, greenstone, New Zealand designer clothing, art". "It was lucky the liner was only in town on the Friday, as Auckland shop hours are listed as Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm. Saturday 9am to noon," he says. "The rest of the weekend is presumably used by retailers to restock their shelves with stuffed marsupials."

Not genetically engineered: This year the Royal Easter Cat Show has a new breed of feline, nicknamed the 'cat in a lamb's clothing'. The Lambkin has a soft, plush, curly coat like a lamb and has been developed from the Selkirk Rex, perfect for a nation of 40 million* sheep. (*Statistics New Zealand's Agricultural Production team, there were 40.1 million estimated resident sheep at June 30, 2000.)
