Cheapest price. End of story. Yeah right! T. Marinovic says that after his water heater blew up, he went in search of the best deal to replace it. "The nearest was Placemakers, which had a replacement for $599, but none in stock. I went to Bunnings. Had the same one in stock at $625. I reminded them of their motto - 'if you find cheaper we will beat it by 15 per cent' - but the defining word is 'in stock'. They wouldn't meet the listed price of Placemakers, let alone reduce it by 15 per cent. Needless to say I went back to Placemakers, paid for it and picked it up from the Rheems factory."

A disappointed Christmas decorator writes: "Shoppers beware of purchasing a Christmas decorating product from China called Snow Spray. Available in $2 shops, it claims 68 per cent more in the can than before. The problem is it seems to be something more like shaving cream and in any case evaporates within seconds of application."

Not very cost-effective: New Hampshire law enforcement wanted to unveil its new mobile drink-driving unit in a big way, reports Reason.com. Six different agencies set up sobriety checkpoints and stopped 480 drivers in a single Friday night. They arrested exactly eight people.

Gold Coast police don't yet know who was to blame when a car with five teenagers collided with a van, killing an 82-year-old and injuring a 72-year-old, but they do know that the teens got hungry while waiting for the cops and ambulance staff to clear the area and so put in a food order for accident-scene delivery. Norman Holtzhausen was overwhelmed by the response he received about his wheelchair. "My apologies to the many callers - after answering about 10 of them before 9am I had to turn my phone off to get some work done. By 6pm I had received 46 phone calls, plus many more texts, and I am sorry I could not give it away more than once. I chose an organisation that refurbishes medical equipment then sends it to needy communities. In future I will use donatenz.com, a website for people who have useful things to give away."
