An English woman got a shock when she received an electricity bill for £90,454,217, the Cambridge News reports. Alison Turner, 50, was surprised, not only by the colossal amount, but also because she's on a pre-pay meter. "I know electricity bills have been going up recently, but this is ridiculous," she said. The Cambridge News helpfully calculated that Turner would have to use e 700 million units to rack up a £90 million bill, which, even if she operated a domestic electric blast furnace consuming 1000 units per day, would take 1900 years.

A school has been forced to defend its actions after trying to scare pupils off drink-driving by pretending that classmate had been killed in a car crash. A police officer walked into 20 classrooms at El Camino High School in California and announced that several students had been killed over the weekend. But the scare tactic backfired when some students, who were not told that it was a stunt for two hours, became hysterical and wept uncontrollably. Their grief turned to fury when they learned they had been duped. School officials tried to counter the outrage by saying the exercise gave students the opportunity to experience real grief. Last year, Colin Harper tried to buy a box of cherry liqueurs at Marks and Spencer in Invernesss. "I stood in the line at the checkout only to be told, 'Sorry sir, we cannae sell you them.' I asked why, the response was 'We cannae sell alcohol before 12.30 on the Sabbath.' It was 12.15 so rather than hold up the checkout line for 15 minutes I left them there, strolled out of the mall, past the local church at 12.30. The congregation was flowing out and the male worshippers were heading straight for the pub."
