Noel Osborne snapped this illuminated piece of plywood on the Mt Wellington Highway. "Note that the sign in the background is also blank - as is the one out of shot to my left, as is their one on Carbine Rd. Come on billboard companies, get something on them or turn out the lights."

Celebrity memorabilia is big on eBay, no matter how ridiculous the item. The core of an apple that Tiger Woods ate whilst winning the US Open has reached nearly US$700. Now, a bloke is offering two apple cores from apples eaten while watching Tiger Woods win the US Open 2008. His masticated cores are much cheaper.

Danielle was at Foodtown in New Lynn yesterday when there was a problem with the computer system. No specials had been loaded for the week, but checkouts were still operating as normal, no signs up to tell people to check their dockets and ask that the special be taken into account. Ten checkouts at an average of say 10 people an hour at an average of $10 savings each = $1000 per hour. Apparently it was nationwide, came right at about 12.30pm, lunchtime.

Permits which allow religious leaders visiting parishioners to "pray and display" have been launched to avoid a backlash over parking fines. The special permits will allow people carrying out religious duties such as visiting ill or dying worshippers and giving the last rites to park in any residential zones in Barnet, northwest London. The scheme is open to all faiths. Permits cost £40 ($105) each, or £70 for second and third permits, and can be issued to worshippers on faith business as well as religious leaders. Debbie responds to Mark Turf's comment about the "mysterious five-day" Easter weekend that hit working parents out of the blue in March. She writes: "If he can remember back to when he was at school, we always had five-day Easter weekends - it's only because Easter has been falling in the middle of the school holidays for the last few years that people seem to have forgotten about it."

Myles responds to Mark Turf's comment about teachers getting extra holidays. "The Ministry of Education dictates how many days per year we are required to be open. If a school takes a teacher-only day they are required to remain open an extra day at the end of the year. The Minister of Education has granted one teacher-only day for staff to get professional development on the new NZ Curriculum this year. Yes ... I kid you not ... one day! That is on top of the [up to] 20 programmes that we as a school are required to implement at present. Principals are reprimanded if they don't open the required number of days."
