Brian from Glendowie writes: "Here was I thinking I would be the only red-blooded male missing out on the All Blacks/Warriors double billing on Saturday night, after being dragged along to Cinderella on Ice at the Aotea Centre. But it was a nice surprise to see former Warrior Monty Betham, TV sports presenter Clint Brown and Radio Sport's very pregnant Kath Harby-Williams. This suggests that maybe the national pastime isn't quite what it used to be."

Bruce Johnstone knows a thing or two about croissants, straight and curved: "I have been told in France that in French bakeries the traditional curved croissant can only be made using real butter. A cheaper variety using margarine must be made in a straight shape so that French croissant buyers know what they are getting. I wouldn't be surprised if the Pak'n Save straight croissants pictured in last week's SideSwipe are also correctly made with margarine, given the cost of butter these days. By the way, the curve in the genuine butter croissant is said to celebrate a rare French historic victory over the Ottoman Turks - to this day the French symbolically eat their enemy's crescent symbol for breakfast.

Passion over television channels has caused disruption in many a relationship, but a recent case of it has confounded Howick police. One night last week they were called to a domestic dispute. Upon arriving, officers were confronted with a couple who had been arguing over which channel to watch. In a fit of pique one of them called the cops in to settle the matter. The police were not amused. "People need to grow up and sort their own lives out," said Senior Sergeant Mike McIlraith. (Source: Howick & Pakuranga Times)

Wendy Andrews of Browns Bay was astonished to read that a 66-year-old woman, who was charged for having to get someone to pump petrol, cannot get out of her car and fill her tank herself. "Doesn't she realise that she is part of the generation of 'women can do anything'? Mind you, if she has been going to the same outlet for 30 years, I guess it says something about boundaries of life. I am, by the way, in my 70th year."
