Michelle Kelly, 31, from Manchester, protested - if she had swerved to avoid the puddle she might have caused an accident. The Road Traffic Act contains an offence of "careless, and inconsiderate, driving", covering such acts as splashing bystanders with puddles, for which courts may impose fines of up to £2500 ($6585).

"Have these prize dorks never listened back to their own messages and wondered if they have given callers enough time to record the numbers?" he asks.
