A couple from Nottingham in England have finally tied the knot - after 49 years, nine children, 22 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. Up until now Ted Towle, 83, has been turned down whenever he proposed to Hilda Clark, 73. Ted told the Mirror: "Hilda won't be rushed into anything, but I'm thrilled that she's finally made an honest man of me." Hilda explained: "I had always been sceptical of marriage after getting wed when I was very young. One divorce is enough for anyone. I thought, 'If it ain't broke, don't fix it'"

A Manchester recluse died because his phobia for cleanliness drove him to use large quantities of antiseptic. Jacques Niemand, 42, was nicknamed "Dettol Man" by local children in the English city. A pathologist told an inquest that it was impossible to tell whether Mr Niemand had resorted to drinking the fluid or had gradually been overpowered by its poisonous fumes. The inquest also heard he habitually placed buckets of Dettol around his flat. Bottles of the product littered the rooms, while a further 100 containers had been packed inside a suitcase.

A Mechanic who was driven around a German city in the boot of a car to investigate a rattling noise was mistaken for a kidnapped child. Police set out to rescue him after a woman said she saw a child being put in a car boot. The police said: "The driver had been worried by inexplicable rattling noises in or near his boot. He called a mechanic, who appears to have had a 'child-like' figure, and who climbed in the boot to get to the bottom of the problem."

The reunion of 80s band The Police after more than 20 years has thrilled their millions of fans - and their tribute acts. The abundance of these groups cannot be solely explained by the pun potential of the name, says BBC online. But a selected roll-call certainly makes entertaining reading: The Police Squad, The Police State, The Police Academy, The Counterfeit Police, Stung. In other tribute band news: a fake Glastonbury (a British music festival), called Glastonbudget, has Pink Fraud and Oasish in its line-up. But none of the names is as good as the Australian Devo tribute band, Davo.
