Ian Hendry writes: "After last week's stay on Stewart Island, we are not sure if we met Basil Fawlty or Gordon Ramsay. A group of nine of us (five Kiwis and four Aussies around 60 years old) booked dinner at an upmarket restaurant. Upon arrival, we asked to order wine first. The waitress brought small sherry-size glasses to our table to drink the 3 bottles of $40-$45 wine. We suggested that we would prefer wine glasses. She informed us that she would have to wash some. After a 30-minute wait, one of our party asked where the glasses were. 'We haven't washed them,' was the reply. Five minutes later out comes the chef (and we presume, owner) and says, 'If you don't f******* like it, there's the f******* door, now f*** off'. We subsequently had another very pleasant meal at another eatery and saved ourselves several hundreds dollars."

Doctors ordered dieter Jane Crook to stop eating fruit and veg because they were making her fat. Jane, 39, weighed 171kg, and kept piling on pounds despite a healthy diet - even when she had only cabbage soup. Then medics realised she had polycystic ovarian syndrome - which means her body cannot process natural sugars. They told her to cut down on the fruit and veg and also fitted a gastric band so that Jane, of Clutton, Somerset, could lose enough weight to start fertility treatment for a longed-for baby. She lost 63kg and she and fiance Andrew Hay, 43, are now expecting a son in July.

DNA paternity testing kits are now on sale over the counter in the US. The US$30 ($37) kit includes swabs for the child, mother and "alleged father" and consent forms. The lab fees are an additional US$120 with another US$250 for all the legal paperwork for use in any custody or child support case. A study at Liverpool John Moores University has found that one in 25 fathers is not the biological parent. (Source: BoingBoing.net)
