The British Department of Health spent 500,000 pounds($1.25 million) on two healthy eating advertisements, which are being described as scare tactics and treating food like poison. One ad shows a girl of healthy weight, biting into a fairy cake, and captioned: "Is a premature death so tempting?" The campaign in women's magazines is designed to target mothers in online forums but many expressed fears that linking occasional treats to obesity was likely to trigger eating disorders and health fears among girls. British chef Delia Smith warned against "demonising home cooking", pointing out that mothers who made cakes were likely to cook the rest of their children's meals, and provide a more balanced diet than those who relied on junk food. A nutritionist questioned the use of using children of healthy weight in campaigns about obesity. "Let's be honest, if you are going to have a picture, it should be of a fat child eating junk food," she said. (Source: Telegraph.co.uk)

Richard huffs: "So much for the observance of Good Friday. At 9am on Good Friday in the main street of Oneroa, Waiheke, the warden was out making a dollar when the shops couldn't. When questioned why he wasn't observing Good Friday he said Auckland City has a bylaw which permits wardens to work that day. Where is the logic? There are so many inconsistencies why not open up all shops - that would mean more shoppers and more parking tickets."

A look at the stories behind the Dr Seuss books. The Lorax, Dr Seuss' take on environmentalism and how humans are destroying nature upset the logging industry so much it sponsored The Truax, a book from the logging point of view. Horton Hears a Who! also inspired controversy. The line "A person's a person, no matter how small", has been used as a slogan for pro-life organisations for years. Clearly not what Seuss was meaning as he threatened to sue a pro-life group unless they removed his words from their letterhead. And If I Ran the Zoo, published in 1950, has the first recorded instance of the word "nerd". (More at MentalFloss.com)

Our family Easter outing on Friday night to Eden Park to see the Lions play the Blues, on account of our 5-year-old joining an under 6 team this year, was a real treat. The walk was arduous for little legs, but the hotdog was delicious and the atmosphere great. Just before half-time the kid was horizontal and we decided to leave. Naturally there was a tired-tantrum at the top of the stairs: "I don't wanna go!", all observed by security. We tersely scooped him up and made our way out. We got down the road and noticed we were being followed by a security guard. After checking the situation he gave up tailing and then we realised ... he was making sure we weren't abducting someone else's kid.
