While in Costa Rica two weeks ago and sweltering under 38C temperatures, all the Graces of Papakura wanted from the local "dairy" was an icecream or cold drink. "However, our cravings were very soon forgotten when we saw the above signage."
Fly-by-night consequences
Welsh mezzo-soprano Katherine Jenkins has revealed the occupational hazard of performing at open-air concerts - swallowing flies. She told the Daily Mail: "They swarm to the lights, and sometimes when I sing, I swallow them - I am often halfway through a note and then I swallow something and have to cough." She added: "It's one of those things you face as a singer. It's happened at least 10 times."
Political incorrectness 101
Britain's Rodney Morgan family, intending to drop major dollars for a stay at the 5-star Ritz-Carlton in Naples, Florida, wanted assurances they would not be served by "people of colour" or people with "foreign accents". Scottish myths
One in five people in Britain think that haggis, the traditional Scottish dish made from the lung, liver and heart of a sheep, is an animal that roams the Highlands, a survey shows. Commissioned by the online takeaway food service Just-Eat.co.uk, the survey found that 18 per cent of Britons believe haggis is a hilltop-dwelling animal. Another 15 per cent said it was a Scottish musical instrument while 4 per cent admitted to thinking it was a character from Harry Potter. Even 14 per cent of the 781 Scottish people polled said they did not know what haggis was. (Source: Reuters)
Handyman mayor
A reader writes: "Sounds like Barry Hobman's neighbour in Mission Bay, who rang the mayor on a wet Sunday night and got him over to help with the council-caused flooding of his home, was a mate of Banksie. The suburb certainly fits. Or is the mayor's home number available to all?"
