A legless Paul Henry cardboard cut-out is included in the Trade Me auction raising money for the Starship Hospital Spring Clean: "Pippa (gently) punched him over on his first morning on the show and a few others have poked him since so there's a couple of little dents and scratches but he's handled it well." One potential bidder comments: "Would only consider purchasing if it was okay to burn it." Current bidding on the auction, which closes on Monday, is at $325.
Keeping abreast of the law
When lawyer Brittney Horstman went to visit a client in the Miami Federal Detention Centre, her bra's underwire set off the metal detector and guards refused to let her in. She reminded them that federal officials had sent out a memo a few years ago telling guards they must grant entry to lawyers wearing underwire bras. But they wouldn't relent. So she went to a restroom and removed her bra. They still refused to let her in - because the prison dress code requires women to wear a bra. (Source: Reason.com)
Broadcasting, Aussie style
After Nine Network's Footy Show presenter Sam Newman referred to a Malaysian man as a monkey, the Australian Communications and Media Authority said the station would have to pay A$200,000 ($253,000) if Newman breached the rules again. Holding up the photo of the man and a woman, Newman said: "What sort of monkey would be marrying that woman? Ah, that monkey right there." He then added: "That man is not long out of the forest." Save water - send beer
Ralph Williams of Northland writes: "Kiwi Rail is sending 300,000 litres of water to Christchurch. Having just purchased a 400ml bottle of water costing $3.80, I figure that equates to a shipment valued at roughly $2,850,000. Wouldn't it be more economical to send beer?"
Airport's mistaken identity
To Tony, who is confused over the location of Auckland International Airport: "If you look up Tom Pearce Drive on AA Maps you will find the airport is in Manukau City," says a reader. "But Google Maps says Mangere South and the Auckland Airport website says the airport is 20 minutes from Manukau City and 40 minutes from Auckland City."
