Runners short-changed
Half-marathon runners celebrated setting new personal bests - only to be told that 0.2 miles had been shaved off the route for health and safety reasons. Officials admitted shortening the route of the Cardiff Half Marathon, meaning all the runners' times were invalid. Officials altered the route after scaffolding blocked part of the course. They blamed health and safety on the late change saying it wasn't safe to run past the building work. (Source: Telegraph.co.uk)
Wait a sec - you're not my son
Sylvia writes: "Your story about the grandad picking up the wrong child from daycare reminded me of an incident many years ago when I drove to the kindergarten to drop off my oldest son. I left my 2-year-old asleep in his car seat and locked the car. I returned to my car, unlocked it and glanced in the rear view mirror to check on my wee back seat passenger. I saw him all right. He was awake now and had a puzzled look on his face ... and striking blue eyes. It took me a second to register this as my son actually has brown eyes. Then I noticed that the car seat was different also. I had got into the wrong car - also a Toyota station wagon, same colour, also with a child in the back seat ... and my key had unlocked it without a problem! What are the chances?"
Confused grandad
John understands how the grandad managed to pick up the wrong child. "That's so easy to do with primary school kids when they're all in the same uniform ... I usually stand around until one comes up and says, "Hi grandad" and take that one. I'd hate to have to pick mine from a line-up at the local police station."
Who are you calling a peach?
Kym was in Istanbul a few years back and it took a few waiters giving him sideways looks and a Lonely Planet phrasebook before he realised why he wasn't getting the peach juice he was ordering. "Peach" in Turkish means "bastard", he says.
ARC bach sign spot on
Ella Harris explains the ARC sign is correct and not a misspelled sign. "There is a bach and this sign indicates the unformed road to the bach (I've stayed in this particular bach) - not the beach as Rob suggests. I suggest Rob has a look at the ARC website and views the range of "baches" that are on offer. They are wonderful holiday spots."
