Trekkies appeased
Nerdiest newspaper correction ever printed, from News.com.au: "User 'Your Mum's Lunch' led the charge of those who correctly pointed out that after losing the original Enterprise to the Klingons, Captain Kirk was given the Excelsior Class Enterprise-B as a stop-gap measure until the refit of the Enterprise-A was completed.
Kirk's last ship was the Ambassador Class Enterprise-C. Enterprise-D and Enterprise-E were in fact, the first of the Galaxy Class models and were under the command of Captain Picard," says the correction. "News.com.au apologises unreservedly for the error ... We also agree that Patrick Stewart is a handsome man, a sentiment expressed by several readers."
Our way is easier
Aaron wonders if any other buyers of home ventilation systems have been stung. "When installing my [system] a few months back, the rep told me the firm would send me an invoice. I waited for it to arrive, but found they had unilaterally decided, without my knowledge or authorisation, to take over $4000 off my credit card. The details were on an old quotation sheet and they decided that would be my preferred method of payment. Needless to say, it wasn't."
Coconut eradication programme
Officials in Mumbai, India, have taken extraordinary measures to protect US President Barack Obama ahead of his arrival there on Saturday. In their effort to provide maximum security, they have removed coconuts which may fall on his head from trees. All coconuts around the Gandhi museum have now been cut down, an official told the BBC.
Tasty apples all year round
Aubrey from Goodman Fielder has some useful info on the flavour of our apples: "The NZ apple season runs from February to late April. Royal Gala is an early-season apple and one that tends to be stunning during the season but doesn't store particularly well (in my opinion). Royal Gala apples sold now are nearly 10 months old.
"Also, the technology for preserving apples has changed. Previously, the major technology used was Controlled Atmosphere, where the level of CO2 was increased. This maintained good flavour but ... the apples became floury as they got older. Smart Fresh is a new technology which preserves fruit and gives good texture throughout the life of the apple, but does result in a loss of flavour.
"My personal preference is for either Braeburn, NZ Rose or Pacific Rose apples when we get this far away from the growing season as they handle long-term storage well."
Orchardist to the rescue
Monte Neal from La Ronde Orchard writes: "Yes, we do still have tasty apples and every Saturday morning we are at the Britomart and Oratia farmers markets. We also deliver fresh apples Auckland-wide direct to people's workplace - email nealsorchard@xtra.co.nz"
